The changing terrain: Sequestration and the presidential election
Sequestration issues are of high importance to military families who are selecting a presidential candidate. More than three-quarters (78 percent) of families surveyed in the latest First Command Financial Behaviors Index® indicated that sequestration is extremely or very important when it comes to selecting a candidate. This figure has remained statistically unchanged since the 2012 presidential election, when 76 percent indicated the issue was extremely/very important.
Of the service members who say sequestration is an extremely important issue in choosing whom to vote for, more than half (52 percent) support Hillary Clinton. Just over one-third of this group (34 percent) support Donald Trump.
Respondents are almost evenly split on which candidate they’ll vote for in November, with 41 percent selecting Trump and 40 percent selecting Clinton.
Sequestration isn’t the only issue on the minds of service members who plan to vote this fall. Other issues of high importance to these military families include Social Security benefits (85 percent), defense spending (84 percent), the cost of healthcare (84 percent), and changes to military retirement and other benefits (78 percent).
